
Dyslexia Checklist
Pre-K to 3rd Grade

VERBAL SKILLS
❑ Speech/language delay (late speaking or late sound development)
❑ Frequently mispronounces words (tat/cat, poon/spoon, catapidder/caterpillar)
❑ Switch order of sounds in words (mawn lower, hangaber, pasghetti)
READING
❑ Guesses at words while reading, particularly based upon context, pictures, or the first letter or syllable of the word
❑ Simply skips the word if he/she does not know it, not even attempting to decode the word
❑ Has difficulty reading, spelling or memorizing sight words despite regular practice and exposure
❑ Demonstrates excessive reversals of letters or numbers, and the errors do not improve with instruction
❑ Often misreads or skips small words, such as: 'the', 'from', 'to' and 'of'
❑ Extreme difficulty with rhyming
WRITING DEVELOPMENT & WRITTEN EXPRESSION
❑ When spelling, includes correct letters but not in the correct order (mlik instead of milk)
❑ Despite instruction, is developing an atypical pencil grip, and often breaks pencil lead or crayons
❑ Cannot keep letters on baseline, or create letters so they are appropriate height or drop below baseline when required, despite instruction
❑ Spells words different ways, even when in very close proximity on the page
❑ Performs poorly on spelling tests, or may succeed on weekly tests but does not use correct spelling in his/her writing
❑ There is little consistency in shape of letters on a page – all k’s should look similar, all p’s, etc.
BEHAVIOR
❑ Has developed an aversion to going to school or reading/listening to books
❑ Throws fits, cries, gets (or feigns) illness when time to go to school or do homework
❑ Has extreme reactions to frustration, or lack of skill mastery
❑ Educators may suspect ADHD, parents may not see the signs at home
MEMORY AND COGNITION
❑ Cannot do flashcards quickly or automatically
❑ Difficulty with learning (and remembering) the alphabet or counting
❑ Cannot remember/does not know the names of classmates or family members
❑ Often misspeaks or substitutes words such as: “fork” for ‘spoon’ or “pasghetti” for ‘spaghetti’ or “pacific” for ‘specific’ or “up” for ‘down’
❑ Has difficulty learning and retaining dates
❑ Struggles to hear the sounds in a word, even when it is enunciated (amilance for ambulance)
❑ Has to bring work home when other students are completing work at school
❑ Is ambidextrous
